Item: North Wind's Night Verse
This +1 striking frost katana is always cool to the touch, nearly uncomfortably so. Unadorned and with no tsuba, its honed blade is carved from a single tusk of dragon-turtle ivory and wrapped in strips of witchwarg hide. Strikes with the katana gain a +2 status bonus to damage rolls against creatures that have a status penalty to their Speed or that are slowed. The status bonus increases to +3 if the weapon has a greater striking rune and +4 for a major striking rune.
Activate—Frigid Breeze F (air, cold, magical, manipulate)
Frequency once per minute
Trigger You deal cold damage to a creature with a spell or ability
Effect You point the north wind's night verse at the triggering creature. A gust of wind from nowhere freezes its bones, imparting a –5-foot status penalty to its Speeds for 1 round.
Trait Effects
Cold: Effects with this trait deal cold damage. Creatures with this trait have a connection to magical cold.
Deadly: On a critical hit, the weapon adds a weapon damage die of the listed size. Roll this after doubling the weapon’s damage. This increases to two dice if the weapon has a _greater striking rune_ and three dice if the weapon has a _major striking rune_. For instance, a rapier with a _greater striking rune_ deals 2d8 extra piercing damage on a critical hit. An ability that changes the size of the weapon’s normal damage dice doesn’t change the size of its deadly die.
Magical: Something with the magical trait is imbued with magical energies not tied to a specific tradition of magic. Some items or effects are closely tied to a particular tradition of magic. In these cases, the item has the arcane, divine, occult, or primal trait instead of the magical trait. Any of these traits indicate that the item is magical.
Two-Hand: This weapon can be wielded with two hands to change its weapon damage die to the indicated value. This change applies to all the weapon’s damage dice.
Versatile: A versatile weapon can be used to deal a different type of damage than its listed type. This trait indicates the alternate damage type. For instance, a piercing weapon with versatile S can deal piercing or slashing damage. You choose the damage type each time you attack.
Critical Specialisation Effects
Certain effects can grant you benefits when you make a Strike with certain weapons and get a critical success. This is called a critical specialisation effect. The exact effect depends on which weapon group your weapon belongs to, as listed below. You can always decide not to add the critical specialisation effect of your weapon.
Sword: The target is made off-balance by your attack, becoming off-guard until the start of your next turn.
