Though its individual sections can be activated separately, this 3-foot-long rod of golden, clockwork gears is most effective when fully assembled. You can Interact to attach one of the sections to another piece or disassemble the rod into its three constituent parts.

Activate—Interference Field 2 (concentrate, manipulate)

Frequency three times per day (once per section)

Effect You adjust the rod's gears to create a field of magical energy that interferes with interdimensional travel. The rod casts Planar Tether with a counteract modifier of +34. The rod's counteract modifier decreases to +32 if only two sections of the rod are connected or to +30 if you have only one section.

Activate—Deactivate Portal 2 (concentrate, manipulate)

Frequency three times per day (once per section)

Effect You touch the rod to a magical portal linking two distant locations, such as an aiudara or a portal created by the Teleportation Circle ritual. The rod attempts to counteract the portal. On a successful counteract check, the portal's magic is suppressed for 10 minutes. On a critical success, you can choose to suppress the portal for up to 24 hours or destroy the portal completely. The rod has a counteract modifier of +34. The rod's counteract modifier decreases to +32 if only two sections of the rod are connected, or to +30 if you have only one section. If you know the portal's destination (for instance, the "Plane of Earth" or the "basement of Absalom's Grand Lodge"), as part of this activation you can fine-tune the rod's frequency, granting the rod a +2 circumstance bonus to its counteract check.

Trait Effects

Artifact: Items with this trait are artifacts. These magic items can't be crafted by normal means, and they can't be damaged by normal means. Artifacts are always rare or unique.

Magical: Something with the magical trait is imbued with magical energies not tied to a specific tradition of magic. Some items or effects are closely tied to a particular tradition of magic. In these cases, the item has the arcane, divine, occult, or primal trait instead of the magical trait. Any of these traits indicate that the item is magical.
