Always crafted in bonded pairs, these delicate rods are carved from amber, jet, or another organic gemstone. Each set of rods is enchanted to resonate at a unique frequency when activated, allowing their bearers to communicate over long distances by harmonizing with latent mental energies.

Activate—Harmonic Link 2 (concentrate, illusion, manipulate)

Frequency once per hour

Effect You initiate communication with the bearer of the bonded rod, who can be anywhere on the same planet. If the recipient is unwilling to receive your missive, the attempt fails. Otherwise, a life-sized illusory image of yourself and any willing creatures within 10 feet appears at the recipient's location, and vice versa, allowing you to see, hear, and otherwise communicate with each other as if face-to-face. The images have no substance and can't physically interact with their surroundings, nor can they be used to deliver spells or other effects. The images are slightly translucent, emit a faint electrical hum, and generate dim light in a 15-foot radius. Both images persist for 10 minutes or until one of the rod's bearers ends the communication.

Trait Effects

Invested: A character can invest only 10 magical items that have the invested trait. None of the magical effects of the item apply if the character hasn’t invested it, nor can it be activated, though the character still gains any normal benefits from wearing the physical item (like a hat keeping rain off their head).

Magical: Something with the magical trait is imbued with magical energies not tied to a specific tradition of magic. Some items or effects are closely tied to a particular tradition of magic. In these cases, the item has the arcane, divine, occult, or primal trait instead of the magical trait. Any of these traits indicate that the item is magical.
