Item: Wind-Up Widget (Wind-Up Spy)
These simple constructs are often created for children or as proof of concept for larger tools. Despite their resemblance to clockworks, wind-up widgets are animated by magic rather than complex internal mechanisms. They lack power sources, however, and must still be wound up before use.
The wind-up spy resembles a small toy soldier in uniform. When activated, you choose a distance up to 80 feet, and the spy moves that far in a straight line. At the start of each of your turns, it records the next 6 seconds of sounds from within 25 feet, overwriting the previous 6 seconds. You can use a single action with the auditory trait to have it save the current recording and walk the same distance backward, ending the activation early. You can Interact with the spy to play back its current recording.
Activate 1 minute (manipulate)
Frequency once per day
Effect You turn the widget's crank for 1 minute, and it comes to life. The widget operates autonomously—as described in its entry—for 10 minutes, then curls into a small metal ball until your next daily preparations.
Trait Effects
Magical: Something with the magical trait is imbued with magical energies not tied to a specific tradition of magic. Some items or effects are closely tied to a particular tradition of magic. In these cases, the item has the arcane, divine, occult, or primal trait instead of the magical trait. Any of these traits indicate that the item is magical.
