Obscure and profane rites enable a blasphemer to transform a captured angel into an undead monstrosity known as a carrion angel. With their decaying flesh, foul stench of decay, and broken wings crawling with flies, none would mistake a carrion angel for anything but the atrocity they are—that is, unless the carrion angel chooses to cloak themself in a more pleasant, illusory deception. A carrion angel is not controlled by their creator, yet they generally regard their creator as an ally. Most outlast their creators, at which point they seek their own evil agendas in the world.

Similar undead atrocities created via sacrifices of other types of celestials exist, and have similar abilities to the carrion angel. Yet for whatever reason, carrion angels are the most well-known and commonly encountered of these rare horrors.

Blasphemous Choices

The typical carrion angel presented here represents the least powerful of their kind, an undead abomination created through vile rites involving an angel's sacrifice to an evil deity. Yet sometimes, fallen angels seek undeath deliberately—not to avoid immortality, as do so many mortals, but simply to embrace an unwholesome and blasphemous new source of power. These carrion angels are often much more powerful than those who had no choice in their fate.
